The Last Samauri

filed under: random gibberish

lastsamposter.jpgI saw The Last Samurai Friday night and I have to say...I was pleasantly suprised. I expected not to see this one due to my fed-up-edness with Tom Cruise lately. But my brother ended up dragging me to it. Sure it had it's schlocky moments of cliches and predictable scenes but that's only to be expected from big Hollywood productions these days. I was more surprised at the larger than expected amount of good content.

Japan itself was definitly my favorite character of the movie, and probably the main reason I liked the movie. The scenery was amazing. I had read once that 80% of Japan is inhabitable because it is such a mountainous nation. They never said how beautiful these mountains were. Japan has always been one of those places that sounded like it probably be neat and exciting but with so many other places I'm dying to go it was somewhere I'd probably just go to if it was on the way to somewhere else. Now I HAVE to make a special trip there someday.

I just found out this movie was made in New Zealand, not Japan. Now I've gotta go there, too.

I lived in Wakayama prefecture for a year. It was the most interesting, learning rich, wonderful and surreal year of my life. Encourage anyone to go.

I thought that this movie was excellent. It has been the best movie that Tom has done ever! And with no sex scenes and non stop action made this film the best of the year!
