Guess who just rolled into town? Springtime!
Today is one of my most favorite days of the year for today is the day of the vernal equinox. Actually, the VE happened officially last night at 18:26 UTC time but since today is the first full day of the new season I choose now to celebrate.
“Springtime is seen as a time of growth, renewal, of new life (both plant and animal) being born, and of the cycle of life once again starting,” according to the fine folks at one of my favorite websites Answers.com. Today is the day of new beginnings; of rebirth. From now one the days are longer than the nights and just keep getting longer. Every day will be brighter and warmer. I just love it!
While our west Texas winter was relatively mild for most of its season it refused to retreat quietly for another 9 months. Our last day of winter was punctuated by a day of intense 70 mph wind blowing anything not nailed down (as well as plenty that now needs re-nailed) anywhere and everywhere. Winter continued its feeble grasp by hanging on for the first part of today making it one of the coldest mornings in weeks. But Old Man Winter couldn’t hold on all day – Spring finally started warming things up just after 11am. Any season that doesn’t feel the need to begin its day until almost noon is just peachy with me.
“The days get longer and the nights smell green…”
In the spirit of the new season I’m sharing out a copy of my favorite Springtime song: The World At Large by Modest Mouse. I’m still looking for ways of converting it to Real Audio or some other way I can stream it but for now just right-click (Windows users, that is) and save-as. I don’t know how you Mac’ers do it but I’m sure you can figure it out. Here is the song.

So far, spring is colder than winter in DFW.

It's a cold motha so far in west Texas, too. Spring seems to be lazier than I remembered (which just makes me like it more).
