Yes Virginia, they do have swap meets in Liege

filed under: Belgium

A week ago I had never heard of Liege, Belgium. I was on CouchSurfing.com looking for a new destination to scope out for a few days and I sent a message to just about everyone in Belgium. Danielle wrote back from Liege and a couple of days later I met her at the train station.

Liege and her soon to be husband Thibaut (they're getting married this weekend, actually) took me in and gave me one of the comfiest places to sleep I've had in a long time. I love that couch! If you ever get rid of it send it to me in Texas!

We had an eventful few days. Saturday morning they got me up WAY too early (just before 4am) for a Belgian-style swap meet where I learned that the uglier the item, the faster it sells. I say "Belgian-style" but that doesn't really mean too much. They sell the same junk we sell at our flea markets in the US except the interesting-looking books were in french. Later in the same day we ended up at a barbeque, a symphony, and an outdoor rock concert. Plus I heard more stories about Milwaukee than I've ever heard in my life (ok, probably the only stories I've heard of Milwaukee). I must have come to Liege at the right time to catch everything all at once. Thanks to all of you.

I had fun with Danielle, Thibaut, and their friend Gaetan and Francoise (there's no way I spelled all of those names correctly).
