All roads lead to Rome

filed under: Vatican City

I'm finally in Rome. What a city! It's amazing how much history is all around you when you walk the streets. Wow!

This place would be paradise if it wasn't soooo hot outside. When the sun is bearing down on me I keep wondering if I'm still in Texas. Then I see the Colloseum or some other impressive Roman structure that eliminates any doubt. They have graffitti here older than the state of Texas.

It also (surprise, surprise) a HUGE tourist Mecca. I should have come here at the beginning of my trip because I'm not that great of a tourist anymore. I won't see all the sites - I'd much rather spend my time with the locals, preferrably in the shade. I tried to go to the Colloseum today but they wanted about $10 to get in. No thanks. I can see the outside of it for free.

I did end up going to the catacombs this morning to see all of the old graves underground. This is the coolest place in all of Rome - literally. The temp is about 55 F degrees underground when you're walking around so it's definitely worth the 5€ just for that. And afterwards I even fixed the computer of a nun who was our tour guide. She can check her email now:)

Rome is fun and there's way too much to see in just two days. Nevertheless I'll be leaving Saturday morning sometime to visit someone from CouchSurfing in Trento, Italy. I'll be there one night and then it's off to Bolzano to see Sandro and Rosanna who I saw in early April. Two days later I'll visit someone in Munich who I tried to meet up with in April but missed by a day. From there, who knows. Any suggestions?

happy 4th! i guess youre not in a country that celebrates it, but happy 4th!

I did pay the 10 euros (more than $10) for the Colloseum and it didn't worth it. And then I did this long line to go to the top of Saint Peter's Basilica that was amazing. Rome has so many thing to see but you're right, so many tourists and the public transportation system is always crowded, so you walk a lot :)
