that new $165 million library in Little Rock

On the way back to Texas from Memphis I finally stopped off at the William J Clinton Presidential Library in Arkansas. I've been through Little Rock four or five times since the libary opened and while the award winning exterior has always looked so incredibly intriguing from the road last week was the first time I was able to pull over. And, of course, The Couch wanted to go, too.

I took lots of pics that speak for themselves (especially with the help of the captions I added to them) so click on the pic above to check them out.

Mile 1,350

Like Louisiana I find myself in the newly, and first time for me, visited state of Arkansas for less than 48 hours. It's Tuesday morning (had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn't Thursday or even Saturday - did I mention I love traveling?) and I'm back on the bike within the hour. Today I head for Memphis, home of the big man they refer to simply as The King. All I can think about is getting my couch picture in front of Graceland. Too bad Elvis can't be in the picture with me...

My plan was to ride northeast from Conway and barely into the boot of Missouri on my way down to Memphis. At least then I'd be able to hit another state on my way to visiting all 48, just in case I don't get a chance later to visit it properly. But now the voice of procrastination starts speaking up and I start to hear too many excuses not to add 100 miles to my trip today. First off, Kellen, my host, is free from work only for today. I'm already going to miss half the day by being on the road so it'll help to get there while there still some daylight to be burned. Second, I'm roughly 10% into my adventure on the road. I have another 13,000 miles or so to go so and while adding another 100 to that total seems almost insignificant in the big picture it doesn't feel so small this morning.

So I'm off. I'm glad to make it to Conway to meet up with Daniel and his family on father's day. Thanks to his family for making me feel so welcome. And I'm thrilled to meet up with another Jim Stone and get our picture in front of our, er, his school. May the next stops down the road be nearly as gratifying.

Jim Stone Elementary School!

I finally got the recognition I have deserved for so, so long. In honor of my amazing influence on the nation's schools they finally named a school after me here in Conway, Arkansas. Ok...maybe it wasn't THIS Jim Stone that they named it after. In fact, it was the Jim Stone pictured with me below!

It's a strange series of coincidences that made that photo possible. First, I had found that there was a Jim Stone Elementary a year or two ago when I was Googleing my name. While I had always intended on visiting the school one day I had forgotten about it until I had already arranged to meet up with Daniel, my current host from CouchSurfing. Once I arrived I found out that not only did Daniel know about the school but you can see it from his porch! Even better, he had met the Jim Stone it was named after. Not only was Conway's Jim Stone a retired prinicipal of one of the schools in Conway but he was the "Toadmaster" of the annual Toad Suck Festival here in Conway. When Daniel was in the third grade he had been awarded by the Toadmaster for having the fastest toad in his divisional race.

What do you know: Jim Stone is in the phone book. After three conversations with Jim's at first, understandably, skeptical wife (he was out golfing for a charity most of the day) I finally got ahold of Jim Stone of Conway. I blurted something out about riding around on my motorcycle with a red couch in tow and wanting to take his picture in front of his school. Without hesitation he said, "see you in five minutes."

So it was a race to drive the couch over to the school to meet up with my double. Since the couch didn't fit into Daniel's Mercedes I popped it on top of the car and held on to it as we drove down the street and around the corner to the school. Sure we could have walked but a) we're Americans and we don't waste an opportunity to drive anywhere, and b) it wouldn't have looked near as funny as my arm clinging to a big red couch on the roof of a Benz that, truly, was originally custom built for one of the Rockerfeller clan.

Jim Stone turned out to be a great guy. He didn't bat an eye when I suggested he plop down on my bright red inflatable couch next to me for a picture. He even hung around for a few minutes to tell us about finding out they were naming the school after him. What can I say, Jim Stone is obviously a name that belongs to the best of men.
