1am roadside

IMG_1973-sm.JPGIt's 1am. My friend and marathon driving companion Ben and I have been on the road for 15 hours when we pull into Whitehorse, BC, Canada - the smallest big town in these here parts - when suddenly we start to smell a burning smell from my hood. We're 946 miles into our 3,300 mad dash to San Francisco from Homer, AK, and weren't exactly excited about stopping for an emergency roadside oil change.

IMG_1972-sm.JPGEarlier this week I realized that my current reservoir of oil has been sliding around my engine since my truck was in Chico, CA - in late April. Since then it's bounced around over 17,000 miles of roadside. For some reason it just didn't occur to me that my lovely friends who drove my lil' truck 10k miles from Cali to Alaska wouldn't bother to change the oil, and I really should have done it when I took repossession of it upon arrival, but it just didn't happen. Ben bought the stuff to do it before we left but that didn't happen either. It obviously was meant to do it in a hurry on the roadside in Canada late at night.

So why am I typing right now and how is this even possible? Both good questions, of course, and I wouldn't think of glossing over them for several reasons. First, I have to wait. The oil is hot and changing it now will just make a hot, sticky, and incomplete mess before it has a chance to settle into the bottom of the truck. Next, we're parked conveniently outside of a hotel that surprisingly has free wireless internet access and owing to my junky-like web addiction I would of course know that within minutes of realizing I have time to kill that doesn't involve me getting sleepier.

So what's the plan? It's simple: drive until we can't drive anymore. We left Anchorage at 9:45am (really, we consider that a fairly early start) with the mission of hitting Vancouver, BC, as soon as possible, each driving in 6 hour shifts. So far we've listened to three lectures from the Harvard Business Review (it's 'energy' management, not 'time' management!), an episode of This American Life (trained monkeys did not make that tissue box holder, kid), 2.5 comedy albums (Ben loves my taste in Lewis Black and Mitch Hedberg but, even with so many references to his hometown Atlanta, he surprisingly isn't into the almighty David Cross?!?), and an assortment of music largely made on our destination of the US west coast. 15 hours have somehow both flown by and barely piddled away.

Why the hurry? It's simple. Burning Man awaits us next week and stopping for a few days in San Francisco is absolutely imperative. Would you not fill up on gas before going on a road trip? Of course not. Would you not stop at the grocery store before going on a picnic? Hell no! So SF here we come!

Ok, it's been 20 minutes. Time to jump under my truck and make the (somewhat environmentally unfriendly/irresponsible) magic happen....

100,000

I'm happy to report that my lovely lil' truck just crossed over it's 100,000th mile. It happened yesterday in British Columbia, Canada and it happened more than 1,000 miles away from me.

Even though I wasn't around for the momentous occasion it was kind enough to send me a note detailing the occasion:

Hey! Although I'm pretty happy to be turned into a pink car for a couple of days and to experience the soft touch of a female hand... (you know what I mean ;-) , I miss my owner! Come back to me! It's cold here in Alaska...

The lovely pink driver...

And the note goes on...

PS: I got caught in a rain/snow storm on the way and got a littlebit wet. My pink driver was so kind to rent a hotel room with an extra bed to dry your stuff. So sorry about that...

Thanks for the update, Pink and truck!

i know, i know...

It's likely been at least a few days since I've updated this and, well, my guess is that it'll be at least a few more until I do it properly. For now know that things couldn't really be better. I'm spending time with amazing people (our small housewarming party on Tuesday brought out 40-50 people - most of which brought us stuff!) and doing a LOT of work on the CouchSurfing site. Who knew so much work went into it??? I have lots of pics and lots of stories - many of them will make it to these pages one of the days. When I'm not writing much know that it's because I'm having way too much fun to spend too much time doing stuff online that isn't "work" related.

In the meantime, here's a random pic of me that someone took a few nights ago. Yes, that's fire in my mouth. What can I say? Us Texans we like things hot.

Pictures of Canada

img_6354.jpg

Want more pictures? You got 'em! In Canada I was able to meet up with a couple of different photographers who took great pictures. Thanks to Joan in Montreal for the pictures on top of the hill (er, excuse me, "mountain") and for Kurt Edward in Toronto for the studio shots. I loved how both of these sets came out. We reall had a fun time!

The pics in the studio could use a bit of an explaination. The girl in the picture with me is Dani, my awesome CouchSurfing host in Toronto. We had a lot of fun. The guy on the motorcycle with me is Kurt, the mad genius photographer. We had a lot of fun taking shots with his camera on a timer so we could both be in them. I was surprised at how well they came out!

Update on my location: I'm in Memphis again, visiting my good buddy Kellen. We took more pictures yesterday and hopefully I'll be able to put them online soon. Several of them came out great!

Still alive - recap

Hey everyone - yep, i'm still alive. I've been a little off the radar lately and haven't felt like writing, ect. Since I wrote last I rode over 1,000 miles from Montreal to Toronto, then Ohio for Cleveland and the capital city of Columbus. A few days ago I arrived here in Roanoke, Virginia to revisit an new/old friend. Within the hour I plan on being back on the bike for a 350 mile jaunt back to Lexington, Kentucky.

After Lex my plan is to hit up Louisville and then St Louis. After that I'm not sure if I'll head north or south. I've been invited to sail a boat across Lake Michigan with a new friend in Ohio in three weeks but I'm unsure if the weather will hold for me that long. Although I have two new tires I'm still positive that the bike is highly alergic to snow and ice. I don't want to find out.

It's been a busy week or two and I promise to write more and put up a lot of pictures. Even though my good camera bit the dust in New York I still have lots of blurry but still somewhat decent pics to share. I also met up with a photographer for some studio shots in Toronto. I have a few of them and they should be up shortly. I have a LOT of pictures from Montreal where a photographer and his friend that I met on CouchSurfing ran around town with me and the couch on my birthday. Lots of great pics to share.

More to come soon. Right now I've gotta get on the bike and chase the sun to Kentucky.

Oh, Canada!

Bonjour from Canada!

Although an extremely cold rain tried to keep me in Vermont yesterday I somehow managed to make it to Montreal just before dark last night. Making it to Canada feels like a monumental goal.

Maine was also a blast. I had two sets of awesome hosts while I was there. Thanks to Linda in Topsham and Jeremy and Marcie just up Route 1 in Hope. Linda picked me up a small birthday cake along with neighboring New Hampshire's own Ben and Jerry's "Gobfather" ice cream (in homage to a reference I made the night before about sleeping with a horse's head - you just had to be there) and I had lobster for the first time with Jeremy and Marcie in their home (I had it in the perfect place!) Maine wouldn't have been the same without all three of you.

More on Canada and Montreal to come!
