Packing it up

I´m on the move again soon. Looks like I´ll be going to Amsterdam in a few days. Still trying to work out how to get there. It´s over 500 miles from here (which translates to a whole bunch of kilometers for the rest of you). Anyone want to give me a ride?

Legoland!

01.My Favorite Sign Ever.jpg

By popular demand I have finally posted my pictures of my day at Legoland. It was a really cool place since they had little minitures of lots of cities and landmarks. Very cool.

Just click here to check them out!

Vildbjerg

Ok, ok, I´m finally writing some more. I guess a week is too long not to write anything - especially when I have access to a computer so easily right now. For those of you who don´t know I met up with my old friend Erik here in Denmark last week. I´ve been staying at his house with him and his girlfriend Lone since the 1st. I can´t believe it´s already been a week! We´ve been having a great time.

This last weekend was especially a lot of fun. Saturday we had a surprise bachelor-type party for two of Erik and Lone´s friends. First we went golfing. I haven´t golfed in years (I don´t even remember the last time) so I was just hoping I wouldn´t be the one they wait all day on. But it turned out that everyone else was just as bad as me:) I think I may have even gotten the highest score (which is pretty sad). I scored a 59 - which would have been great if we played 18 holes. We did have that. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun and it´s fun to say I´ve golfed in Denmark now.

We went straight from the golf course to the bowling alley. I played with Erik and Tommy (the guest of honor) where we seemed to trade off who won which game. We played so much that even as I type my right arm aches. Bowling - one more game I haven´t played in years and now I wonder why I haven´t done either one more often.

We finished bowling around 6pm or so and had already had a long day of lots of activity. But the party wasn´t over yet. We went back to Tommy and Jane´s house for a big danish dinner. These guys know how to party here in Denmark. I should have been taking notes to teach some people who to do it right back in the States. We had tons of food followed by lots of good wine and booze. Erik´s friend Jesper kept fixing me up with some Red Bull-like concoction of who knows what most of the night. He kept telling me it was great because it wouldn´t give me a hangover the next day (he was right). Everyone kept going and going all night...no, literally all night. I left to go to sleep after 4am and just about everyone was still going strong.

I´m having a great time here in Denmark but I´ll soon head south again. Not quite sure where I´ll go just yet, just know I have a lot of other places to see. I just hope I have as much fun during the rest of my time here in Europe as I have here in "Wild Mountain" (the english translation of Vildbjerg).

For more pictures just go here.

Where to now?

Long-term, guerilla-style travel is a strange way to live a life. This is just one of the thoughts I´ve been having lately. This is my tenth week of traveling from place to place every few days, hitting up strangers over the internet to stay on their couch and use their computers to type to whoever reads my random musings. I´ve had (and continue to have) tons of fun. But the other thought in my head present more than any others is: where to now?

I ask myself this question almost on a day-to-day question, often while looking at my big map of continental Europe. The possibilities seem so endless. There´s Ireland just to the southwest of me and I check Ryanair and other discount airlines within Europe on the cost of getting there tomorrow. And then I see Scotland and wonder what the ferries are like between here and there. And then flamenco thoughts pop in my head and my focus goes to Spain...and then Italy...and then Croatia on down to Greece. I think of new friends I´ve made I´d like to see again from France to Prague and those I´ve only met online in the Dutch countries. My head spins with possibilities and just keep thinking: where to now?

And then comes the bigger meaning of that question. I want to do more. Not just travel more and see more but do more. I´m having a ball out here, for the most part, but I can feel like I should be doing more with my life. I need a new project. I need a new purpose.

So these are some of the thoughts going through my head. I have so many more questions than answers.

Aarhus

Having a good time in Denmark once again. I love this country! The people I´ve met here have all been amazing. What´s funny is that every time I tell that to someone who lives here they are always amazed. While the natives of this country see their countrymen as closed-off, reserved people who keep to themselves I have found quite the opposite. As a whole, Denmark´s people have been the warmest and more welcoming yet.

And most of them speak english! That helps a LOT!

Two days ago I went with Kirsten and Deiter to K´s grandparent´s 50th anniversary dinner in Odense. It was nice of them to invite me along and I had a great time meeting her family. Traditional Danish food is yummy! It sure beats the 25 krøner pizza-slice-with-a-Pepsi special I keep picking up at the 7-11s around here. That´s the cheapest thing I can find when I´m walking around that fills me up for several hours 25k is a little more than $4 - EVERYTHING is expensive in Denmark. Plus there seen to be more 7-11s here than in the US (which I didn´t think was possible). I had agood time with K and D and hope to see them again.

Yesterday I met up with Signe, my current host, while she was SCUBA diving in the sea. She´s finishing up her certification course so she can go diving in Africa (I wanna go!!). Afterwards we hopped a fence and helped ourselves to a concert at Tivoli (it´s like a micro version of Disneyland). The band was a really popular one here in Denmark and I think the name was Swan Lee, but that could just be how it sounded to me at the time.

Denmark

Did I mention how I love Denmark?

The Danish people are awesome! I´m getting ready to go visit my friend Erik near Herning, Denmark early next week. So I decided it would be fun to get there a little early to the 2nd largest city in Denmark known as Århus. So I went on one of the hospitality sites (listed on the left column of my site) and sent out messages to 8 people asking for their help in last minute accomodation. In less than a day I heard back from five of them, all of them saying to come on over. I love it!!!

Hamlet´s Castle

I almost forgot to talk about last Sunday.

I was in Copenhagen and it seemed that every day in Copenhagen was overall wonderful. I met a lot of great people who went out of their way to ensure my stay in their city was a pleasant one. Sunday and Soren were no exceptions.

We started the day by driving up to Helsingor on the northwest coast of the island of Fyn Sjælland (someone please correct me if I named the wrong island - i´m far too lazy right now to dig out my map thanks for the correction) that Copenhagen is on. The drive was right up the coastline and very beautiful. Once we reached the end of the road there was a huge castle on the shores of the North Sea (again - correct me if I´m wrong). We had a picnic and watched the ferries go by between Denmark and Sweden. I could see Sweden in the not-so-far distance so I snapped a picture. There - I´ve seen Sweden. That will have to do for now.

After lunch we visited the castle that I had just learned during the tour that it was the one that inspired Shakespear to write Hamlet. Apparently there was a story of a similar history that took place within those castle walls. Cooooool.

From there we headed back towards Copenhagen and stopped off at his parent´s house for dinner. His family was just as nice as he was. We had a great dinner of traditional Danish food and talked for quite a while. His father owns a large greenhouse and I got the grand tour. It was a fun day.

Hitch and hike

Where to begin?

Yesterday was a crazy day. Even though I had three terrific hosts I decided that after a week it was time to leave Copenhagen. I made my way to a busy intersection leading out of the city that Soren recommended and found a lift without too much trouble. Actually, I found two lifts. The first one took me about 1/2 a mile to a better location - the one I had started at and moved down the road from because I thought it sucked. However it turned out to be ok because another guy picked me up within 20 minutes or so.

Unfortunately for me this guy was only going to Roskilde, which was not on the way I intended on going. He dropped me off at the next fork in the road and again I waited. A guy from Turkey who spoke no english picked me up. He read my sign "Karlslunde" (on the way to Germany) and dropped me off right there - at this rest stop just down the road in Karlslunde. He didn´t understand that I was going the same direction as he, even though I kept pointing to Germany via Rødby/Puttgarden on the map. He just kept pointing at my Karlslunde sign. No luck.

Quite a while later a german trucker named Armin waved me over to his rig. He wasn´t going to the specific place I wanted to go (a completely different direction, no less) but I didn´t care at that point. I had waited long enough and was ready to go anywhere not to be stuck in Karlslunde. It turned out the Turk dropped me off on the wrong side of the motorway to find a ride to Robny Havn. Thanks a lot.

I couldn´t have met a nicer lift giver than Armin. He was incredibly friendly and talkative. Plus, he only briefly talked about Bush and Iraq. He offered me beer and gave me a coupon for food on a ferry if I ever happen to use Scandlines in the future. To top it off he went out of his way to find a good spot for me to hitch from. But before he dropped me off he graciously treated me to a steak dinner. Can you believe my luck?? He wasn´t even allowed to pick me up (that´s a no-no for truckers) and now he was feeding me steak! And it was a good one, too. I didn´t know they made steaks that good outside of Texas!

Before he said goodbye he scoured the parking lot of the truck stop he dropped me off at for a German bound trucker. He said a few words to him and I had a ride to Germany! Thanks Armin!

Unfortunately the new trucker didn´t speak a word of english. I thought the agreement made by Armin was that he drop me off just across the border in Flensburg but this didn´t appear to be the case. We passed Flensburg by. No worries, it was still daylight (doesn´t get dark until after 11pm here) and I didn´t have arrangements there anyway. Then he pulled into a truck rest stop (they have tons of them here) with no traffic and stopped. He made the "sleep time" gesture and I got out.

What happens next? I´ll have to write about it later. My prepaid time is up right now and there´s a line for the computer. I´ll finish my story later!

Royal Wedding

Yesterday was a lot of fun. I spent the whole day with Torben, the father of Janne, whom I stayed with my first two nights here in Copenhagen, Denmark. First off, Janne was wonderful. She opened her home to me and cooked me two great meals. Thanks Janne! And then yesterday her Dad took me out on the town to experience a royal wedding.

København goes wild for their royals! We started the day off with a free breakfast (free is a travelers favorite word, by the way) on one of the town squares. There were tons of people there and everyone seemed excited about Prince Frederick and a Tazmanian girl by the name of Mary getting hitched. From there we made our way through the town and onto a boat ride tour down the harbors. Copenhagen is full of history (anyone heard of Hans Christian Anderson?) so the tour was very cool. The rest of the day Torben took me around and told me about a lot of the history himself. We also took many opportunities to sample the local beers. Yum! Torben even tried to help me hitch a ride on a couple of boats going up towards Sweden but we didn´t have any luck. We finished the day watching Fred and Mary get married on a big screen TV on one of the squares. I had a lot of fun with him and was glad to have him show me his city.

Last night I stayed with Mette who is currently on her way to Turkey right now. I hope she has a great trip. Thanks for the place to stay!

Tonight I´m with Søren. Last year he spent about a year riding a Yamaha motorcycle from Denmark to Australia. I´m so jealous.

3 rides to København

Yesterday was a fun day. I started out around 1pm from Hamburg (where, of course, it was on and off again rain) and got a ride within a half hour by an ex-military German. "Ah, you´re from Texas? Ah, Bush!" This begins my least favorite conversation that I unfortunately have with most of the new people I meet. No one likes "W" here and I like him less and less with every person I meet. "Sorry, I did´t elect him into office, i can´t do anything about it. Let´s talk about something else?"

I had another quick ride to the port of Puttgarden, Germany. He was going on the ferry to Denmark but apparently didn´t want to take me on. So I stopped and wrote out a sign for "Danmark" (how they spell it here) and just a few minutes later I had a ride. This guy was from Argentina and worked smuggling in beer from the German side of the border. So we hopped on the ferry and hoped they didn´t pull him over to find the back of his van completely stuffed with beer. He just happened to be going all the way to København so I found my ride!

My new ride dropped me off right at the door of the girl´s house I was staying at (nice!) She is great! I helped her cook a great dinner and we were both stuffed quickly. It was a great night.

I gotta run. 30 seconds left on my internet time!
