Mile 1,020
Does anyone know the precisely where Bonnie and Clyde were shot dead? I do now! These two met their maker at the hands of the police in small-town Louisiana. They were on the run and had apparently pulled over to take a break when they were gunned down before they could make a move. Problem solved. I have a feeling they still do things a little differently here in Louisiana.
After we found the marker (thanks in part to my GPS unit and the wealth of information that is the internet) we went on to the Bonnie and Clyde Trade Days market. I almost bought an electric air pump for my red couch companion that plugs into the cigarrette lighter of my motorcycle but that's not the near purchase that I regret not making. For $6 I could have had a cool cowboy hat that looked like one of the characters from the Dukes of Hazzard would have worn. It had orange feathers around the brim and everything. I'm definitely suffering from an inverted case of buyer's remorse.
My host Will was a great tour guide. In addition to the Bonnie and Clyde theme (we also stopped by the museum but didn't feel compelled to pay the $7 entrance fee and enter the small room with a DVD playing that constitued the museum) we had the best crawfish etouffee ever in the nearby town of Natchitoches. Raise your hand if you know how to pronounce that one? Somehow they get "NAK-a-tish" out of that. If this town sounds familiar you may recognize it as the setting of the Julia Roberts' film Steel Magnolias.
I was in Will's company less than 48 hours but we managed to put a week's worth of activities in those two days. Saturday night we found ourselves in a huge Shreveport country bar where my near cowboy hat purchase would have been right at home. I'm not at all a fan of country music but I looooove watching rednecks! Sadly no redneck fight broke out as everyone seemed there to have a, alas, good time.
Saturday night I was asleep around 5am and was on the road the next day around noon. Where am I typing this from right now? What adventures have transpired since the last tear was shed over my lost opportunity of new hat ownership? Stay tuned...
