"Couch man doesn't take life sitting down"

"Don't confuse "couch man" with "couch potato." This guy's on the go"

This is my fifth time in Roanoke, VA. I keep stopping through here - no, usually going out of my way to come here - because I can't help but meet amazing people. This last week has been no exception. Instead, I've made more connections this time around than surely the last four times combined.

Following a random string of synchronicities a few nights ago I met a woman in a bar who recognized me from, er, somewhere else (i'm not telling.) It turns out she happened to be a photographer and just happened to work for the local newspaper. A couple of days later we ended up roaming around town with a red couch in tow with good times of course ensuing. This is how I came to do the TimesCast for the paper as well as a story for The Roanoke Times.

Thanks to J and E for the interesting night.

Click here for the Roanoke Times article. If you have a chance to see the actual print version you'll see LOTS more pics.

Happy birthday!

Yes, it's been a while since I've last updated. My last blog entry went something like “I’ve had a horrible run of luck and now I’m about to go hitchhike.” That was over a week ago. Oops.

Tonight was originally intended to be an evening of playing catch-up but, well, it's just not happening right now. Instead I'm taking the easy way out and just posting a few pics.

I made it to catch the end of my new/great friend Elizabeth's birthday party. Happy b'day, E!

I spent most of the week with Elizabeth and had a lot of great times.

I also met up with more old CouchSurfing friends including my best friend Audette. On Wednesday night Peer, Jen and their adorable new daughter (my first Roanoke hosts) cooked Elizabeth and I an awesome Asian dinner. Yum!

I'll (might) write more later but for now I'm pooped. More later!

Still alive - recap

Hey everyone - yep, i'm still alive. I've been a little off the radar lately and haven't felt like writing, ect. Since I wrote last I rode over 1,000 miles from Montreal to Toronto, then Ohio for Cleveland and the capital city of Columbus. A few days ago I arrived here in Roanoke, Virginia to revisit an new/old friend. Within the hour I plan on being back on the bike for a 350 mile jaunt back to Lexington, Kentucky.

After Lex my plan is to hit up Louisville and then St Louis. After that I'm not sure if I'll head north or south. I've been invited to sail a boat across Lake Michigan with a new friend in Ohio in three weeks but I'm unsure if the weather will hold for me that long. Although I have two new tires I'm still positive that the bike is highly alergic to snow and ice. I don't want to find out.

It's been a busy week or two and I promise to write more and put up a lot of pictures. Even though my good camera bit the dust in New York I still have lots of blurry but still somewhat decent pics to share. I also met up with a photographer for some studio shots in Toronto. I have a few of them and they should be up shortly. I have a LOT of pictures from Montreal where a photographer and his friend that I met on CouchSurfing ran around town with me and the couch on my birthday. Lots of great pics to share.

More to come soon. Right now I've gotta get on the bike and chase the sun to Kentucky.

Virginia Beach pics

In Virginia I was able to meet up with some family. My cousin Justin is in the Navy and opened up his couch to his vagabond relative for a night. That weekend just coincidentally happened to be the night my aunt Jincy and her daughter Jessica were also there. At night we caught a free concert of REO Speedwagon at the military base (even though Justin thought we were going to see "Audio Bandwagon". He'll never live that one down.

I keep dragging my feet on putting up these pics and I'm constantly catching flak for it. Sorry! For those of you interested, click here to see them. For the rest of you, NYC pics will be up shortly (i hope!)

Yep, still alive

I know it's been ages since I've written anything on here but this entry won't be too informative. Things have been very fast paced and busy lately. After an amazing time with Nathan in Lexington, KY I weaved across the Ohio River in and out of Ohio on my way to Lacy's place in Huntington, WV. Two days later I found myself on the beautiful back roads of West Virginia winding through around 200 miles of turns every few seconds. While it was very slow going (courtesy of both the frequent but fun turns as well as a steady rain) and probably 100 miles too long to completely love I still am glad to have taken the road less traveled. Today I'm spending my third day in Roanoke, VA at my second host's house of the city. Peer and Jen took care of me the first two nights and now Audette and her family have made me feel right at home.

The next week or two look to be very busy. Either today or tomorrow (more than likely tomorrow) i'll be heading to the coast (i MISS the ocean) to see my cousin Justin for a quick stay in Virginia Beach. On Saturday I'll head north to Washington, D.C. to say hello to a cowgirl and her friends for what promises to be an eventful weekend. Then on Tuesday or Wednesday it's back on the bike again for a short jaunt across silvers of different states to the City of Brotherly Love that is Philly. Friday night I'll find myself in Flanders, NJ in the familiar home of "Red and Silent Rob" - friends I haven't seen in almost ten years.

I'm still taking lots of pictures and will slap more online soon. Stay tuned!
